Residence in Turkey: how long you can be away

A Turkish residence permit can be cancelled or refused at renewal if you spend too long outside the country. Short-term and long-term permits differ.

Short-term residence

A short-term residence permit (ikamet) may be cancelled or not renewed if you are outside Turkey for more than 120 days within a 360-day period. Keep your total absence under about four months per rolling year.

Long-term residence

A long-term residence permit may be cancelled after about one year of continuous absence from Turkey, save for legal exceptions such as health, education or compulsory public service.

The short-term limit is cumulative (total days); the long-term limit is about one continuous absence. Confirm your case with the DGMM (Göç İdaresi) — this is general information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

How long can I be outside Turkey on a short-term permit?

No more than 120 days within any 360-day period, or the permit can be cancelled or refused at renewal.

What about a long-term permit?

It may be cancelled after roughly one continuous year abroad, barring legal exceptions.

Is the short-term limit continuous or cumulative?

Cumulative — it adds up all your days abroad within the 360-day window, not just one trip.
